“This new system from MSite is set to transform the way we manage our site inductions. Leaving aside the time and substantial cost savings, MSite Online Induction moves the responsibility for inductions away from our busy sites and on to the workers, who will receive consistent and centrally approved information across all of our projects.”

Glenn Christiansen - Health and Safety Director at Carillion

Background

Carillion is an international integrated support services business, with roots and continued interest in construction. Employing around 48,500 people and operating in the UK, Canada and Middle East, Carillion have annual revenues of around £5 billion.

To achieve health and safety goals and strategic efficiency, the senior management team sought a solution to manage the induction of workers on Carillion construction sites. The key goal was to achieve improvements in the induction process by allowing for greater overall consistency and efficiency in the training programme.

The challenge

Carillion needed to streamline the entire inductions and training process for new starters on site, so the solution would have to provide:

  • Increased compliance to H&S policies.
  • Maximum efficiency in time and cost for the construction sites.
  • A more consistent approach to corporate inductions and training.
  • A recorded environment that also integrates with key accreditation databases such as CITB and CSCS to ensure employees have the right competencies.

Since 2005, Carillion has been using MSite biometric access and attendance to manage their workforce and keep their sites safe and secure. Now, as this partnership enters its 12th year, Carillion looked to MSite to provide the cloud-based technology capable of meeting their requirements across all sites.

The Solution

MSite developed Online Inductions & Training as a software tool to manage the inductions process for large numbers of workers. The product allows Carillion workers to complete their site induction and any necessary training before they arrive on site, saving time and money.

The entire process is instigated by the site, which sets up the contact details of the subcontractors in MSite. Subcontractors and direct employee supervisors can then log in and invite their employees to participate in the online induction. This takes all the responsibility for general inductions away from the sites and onto the subcontractors and workers, which means Carillion sites do not have to check right to work status or worry about taking time to repeat unnecessary induction training on site.

Glenn Christiansen, Health and Safety Director at Carillion said: “Redirecting the first element of our three-part induction process onto a web-based platform which people can access before they arrive at our contracts has enormous benefits for everyone involved. This efficient new approach clearly frees up valuable time for our workers on site, but the key benefit for us is the consistent level of information everyone will now receive.”

Once employees have completed the induction at home, any further site specific information that needs to be completed on site can be booked online. And if the individual hasn’t completed the training in competencies they require, they won’t be going through the turnstile as the entire system is integrated with access control.

MSite is also the first system of its kind to fully integrate with the CITB database, ensuring workers have their CSCS credentials and role competencies checked before they start work on a Carillion project.

Glenn Christiansen added: “The CITB and CSCS integration is a unique aspect to the MSite system and this is one of the factors that make it ideal for use by our sites. MSite is a proven system that could be adapted to our industry leading requirements which made it an ideal solution for us.”

The Result

Thanks to MSite, Carillion has streamlined and expanded its online inductions process for all their projects. Across UK construction operations – Online Inductions is making a substantial impact.

“This new system from MSite is set to transform the way we manage our site inductions and training. Leaving aside the time and substantial cost savings, MSite Online Induction moves the responsibility for inductions away from our busy sites and on to the workers, who will receive consistent and centrally approved training across all of our projects.” Glenn Christiansen, Health and Safety Director at Carillion.

Tim Aston Health & Safety Director at Carillion who project managed the implementation of Msite said: “Key and consistent health and safety messaging is vital to the whole of our workforce whether it be Carillion or our Supply Chain Partners; efficiencies delivered through the online workforce induction management technology plays a vital role in supporting our strategic business objectives today and into the future.

"The CITB and CSCS checking and validation functionality through API electronic interfacing brings these intelligent systems together checking important right to work information and certification. No longer is it acceptable to make assumptions, we need to assure ourselves through 100% assurance. This innovation will allow us to continue to meet and exceed the needs of the industry by integrating with key accreditation organisations.”
